Deposits Refunded

It is common in the 1930's to find entries in the lists describing deposits that sponsors made to the government as a guarantee that the immigrant would marry them, for example, not become a public charge or only perform domestic work for a certain amount of time after their arrival in Canada.

 

Orders in Council were created when a sponsor presented an argument to the Privy Council that, although the conditions had not been met, their deposit should be refunded because of special circumstances.

 

We have photographed these Orders in Council, indexed the names of the sponsors and immigrants and added them to the other names on our website. Below is an example of a Deposit Refunded Order in Council.
